Structure of Agreement

The Art Lease Programme operates under a formal consignment agreement.

Artworks remain the property of the Gallery throughout the lease period. Lease terms typically run for 12–18 months with monthly or quarterly payments.

Accounting Treatment (General Guidance)

In many cases, lease payments for artwork may be treated as an operational business expense rather than a capital expenditure. This can allow payments to be recorded as deductible expenses against corporation tax, subject to accounting treatment and HMRC guidelines.

By contrast, purchasing artwork outright is generally treated as a capital asset acquisition, which may not qualify for immediate tax relief in the same manner.
